Having completed a degree in English and a Masters in film and literature at Hull University, I first went into journalism at the Hull Daily Mail in 2000, where I gained an NVQ Level 4 in production journalism and became a senior sub-editor.
I later worked for the Press Association in various roles including Teletext assistant editor and TV listings operations manager, as well as editing the PA’s main news wire and working on sports pages for national and regional newspapers.
My current role is managing director of my own company, Hawk Editorial, which in October 2012 became the new publisher of H&E naturist magazine, an 88/92-page title which is the oldest and most popular naturist magazine in the world. I edit, design and write for the magazine, as well as running all aspects of the the day-to-day business, including retail, advertising, website and social media.
In 2018, I became the contributing editor of BusinessWorks magazine, which celebrates entrepreneurship across Hull, East Riding and the Humber. I also continue to work for PA Media part-time, sub-editing on the Daily Telegraph, across supplements, news features and news. As of November 2020 I am the Hull City columnist for The Hull Story.
I am a qualified proofreader, with certificates in proofreading and copy-editing from the Publishing Training Centre (these are the only industry-recognised qualifications). Clients include acclaimed Hull writer Brian W Lavery and Barbican Press. I also offer design and typesetting services, recently completing work on books by pilot and photographer Charlie Simonds, and the Council for Cadet Rifle Shooting.
I can turn my hand to a variety of subjects, from the arts and culture to sport, current affairs and technology.
Please contact me if you are interested in contributing to H&E, or would like to discuss my proofreading/writing/design services.
“Sam is a consummate professional journalist, writer, proofreader and editor – with a work ethic to match. I was delighted with the assiduous work she did as copy editor on my latest book, The Luckiest Thirteen (Barbican Press, 2017). I have no hesitation in recommending her.”
“I found Sam Hawcroft at Hawk Editorial to be friendly, accommodating and very professional in her work. I have no hesitation in strongly recommending Sam”
“Sam designed and proofread two of my books. The first, Wild and Free, is a photographic book that was enhanced considerably by Sam’s imagination. The second, Even the Birds Stopped Singing, is an illustrated semi-biographical book that has once again benefited from Sam’s enthusiasm and expertise. I recommend Sam’s professional creativity without reservation.”
